Blockchain technology firm Sigmachain offered to retain all CyWorld data. The offer gave hope to CyWorld subscribers who are afraid of losing all their personal photos, data, and other memories.
As is well known, years before Facebook made an official debut, CyWorld was a darling of many South Koreans in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The basic format, except for languages, is almost similar between CyWorld and Facebook.
As Facebook debuted, CyWorld was struggling to survive. It announced that it would open the CyWorld Homepage for the next one year. One year later, it would shut down the homepage because it is meaningless and unprofitable to keep CyWorld running.
Sigmachain said this week it would provide data backup service for CyWorld users even before CyWorld shut down. A Sigmanchain spokesman said CyWorld is a memory warehouse for South Koreans, mostly in the 30s and 40s.
Once negotiations with CyWorld are complete, Sigmachain would store all CyWorld data free of charge, the spokesman said.
Sigmanchain runs its blockchain main-net called Futurepia. Its cryptocurrency PIA is listed on three global cryptocurrency exchanges. It also launched DApp called SNAC social messenger service.
