‘PASS’ mobile driver’s license verification service launched by Korean TOP 3 mobile carriers (KT, SKT, LG U+) has reached a total of 1 million users by October 9th.
If you register your driver’s license in the ‘PASS’, an identity verification application connected to the three telecommunications companies, you can use this license as a driver’s license and ID card both online and offline. This service is the first commercialized blockchain-based digital identification card in Korea which is a Ministry of Science and ICT’s regulatory sandbox last September.
Since the launch of the service, it is also used as an adult identification card when purchasing alcohol or cigarettes at all CU and GS25 convenience stores nationwide. Customers and convenience store owners are highly responsive so that it plans to expand alliances with other convenience stores in the second half of this year.
Since last month, 27 driver’s license examination centers across the country have used it instead of card verstion of driver’s licenses when updating or reissuing driver’s licenses and issuing driver’s licenses in other languages.
The three telecommunications companies and the National Police Agency are preparing to apply PASS mobile driver’s license to police administration for traffic police inspections in the future. It is expected to be used for identification purposes in future financial transactions and communication services. as well as in the rental car and shared mobility industry, where applications for non-face-to-face use are frequent.
In the future, the three telecommunications companies plan to upgrade their services with a dedicated network and encryption system built on the National Police Agency and the Road Traffic Authority system server, as well as the technology to block forgery and alteration of licenses based on blockchain and identity verification based on mobile phone names.
